Your approach to classroom management and organization

Building upon the classroom management and organization focused on teaching English to fifth-grade students, an integral aspect of this approach involves recognizing and addressing the unique needs of each student. By starting from the students' needs, I adapt the methodology to ensure a consistently motivating learning environment, enriching the overall learning process. I firmly believe that the integral formation of an individual transcends imposed barriers, aligning seamlessly with the objective of learning a foreign language and emphasizing growth at all levels.

In line with these principles, I propose the incorporation of technological resources to add a contemporary dimension to the learning experience. The goal is not only to facilitate language acquisition but also to nurture broader skills such as creative thinking, memorization, cross-cultural exploration, and language reflection. This forward-thinking approach seeks to synergize with and strengthen the competencies outlined for foreign language acquisition.

As we navigate this educational journey, our collaborative efforts among teachers, students, and technological resources become the catalyst for a transformative experience. My emphasis remains on cultivating not just linguistic proficiency but also fostering a holistic growth mindset, where students emerge as conscientious and respectful individuals, ready to embrace challenges with an open and collaborative spirit. This collective effort contributes significantly to the ongoing construction of an educational community that is both enriched and equitable.

An account of procedures used for teaching large classes and for using group work.

PROCEDURE USED WERE:

Firstly, I would like to highlight that I always started my classes with a warm-up activity where I introduced the topics and objectives that we were going to cover during the class, for example:

  • I kindly asked the students to focus on the topic explanation.
  • I presented the topic to the students while writing it on the board.
  • I projected an introductory video related to the topic as a warm-up.

I requested a volunteer student to participate with the teacher in exercises such as describing or pronouncing the English vocabulary or phrases worked during the class, in front of the other students to pronounce each one aloud.

I also asked the students to answer questions related to the topic to familiarize them more with spoken English.

I projected a video to students on YouTube related to English pronunciation activities. Then, both the students and the teacher in training pronounced aloud, over and over again, the vocabulary worked on as a repetition technique every week, and so on, during a period of time until they learned the correct pronunciation.

Finally, I try to deliver to each student at the end of the classes approximately a sheet of paper with a song verse written on it as a sort of warm-up, which they must practice once each class ends, and then, to be also practiced at the beginning of the following ones.

  • Promote strategies and dynamics that highlight the importance of learning English as a second language, through interactive activities that show its applicability in everyday life. This playful approach not only reinforces language skills, but also cultivates a deeper appreciation of culture and the academic and professional opportunities that English proficiency can provide.
  • Highlight the vital importance of integrating information and communication technologies (ICT) in the learning of fifth grade students, in order to raise their communication skills in foreign languages.
  • Design visual and interactive activities with an audiovisual approach to strengthen reading comprehension, using short, simple and illustrated texts that address various topics.
  • Motivate and encourage students to actively participate in short dialogic exchanges, placing special emphasis on achieving clear pronunciation and effective intonation.
  • Present effective strategies to improve text production, allowing students to demonstrate their knowledge of everyday situations through their writing.

A diagram of your ideal language classroom

The ideal classroom for me should consist of the following elements:

Whiteboard: The whiteboard should be large and located at the front of the classroom so that all students can see it easily. Additionally, it should have all the necessary elements for the teacher to write and draw on it clearly.

Comfortable seating: Chairs should be comfortable so that students can sit for long periods of time without feeling tired or uncomfortable. Additionally, they should be adjustable so that students of different sizes can sit comfortably.

Storage spaces: The classroom should have enough shelves and storage cabinets to store books, materials, and tools necessary for English classes.

Computers and technological devices: Students should have access to computers and technological devices to practice and improve their English language skills.

A description of the most effective activity you developed with the students.

In the activity I conducted, students engaged in group discussions about interactive comics. They read the comic individually and gathered in small groups to share thoughts, emotions, and opinions about the story. Each student had the opportunity to express their perspective, ask questions, and contribute to the discussion. The activity strengthened reading comprehension skills, fostered critical thinking, and built confidence to express ideas. It also promoted a sense of community and collaboration. To enhance the activity, I provided guiding questions and encouraged students to take notes while reading the comic. In summary, the literary circle discussion with interactive comics was effective in cultivating a love for reading and improving critical thinking and communication skills.
